A Quick Note about the MBA and Business School Data

Let’s pause for a second and reflect on what you’ve learned so far. We’ve covered frameworks to help you choose schools and build your career plan, looked closely at school stereotypes, learned about defining careers by industry and function, explored which post-MBA industries and functions are most common at top US programs, and reviewed the career searching process at school. Whew!

In the following sections, we’re giving you a glimpse into specific industries and functions, using the data from placement reports. We’re shifting from how to think about your post-MBA career, to sharing job-specific information with you, backed by placement report data.

Before we get into it, we want to share some information about the data. We’re going to use two metrics from the placement reports to explore which MBAs have the best outcomes for various functions and industries:

·       % of grads that go into each function / industry: This helps you determine which industries are well-represented at different MBA programs. This might mean that more companies from that industry recruit at that school, and/or that Career Services at that school has more experience and resources to support you recruiting for that industry.

·       # of grads that go into each function / industry: This is also an important

data point for example, 13% of Minnesota Carlson grads and only 4% of HBS grads go into Manufacturing… but since HBS is a much bigger school than Carlson, that ends up being 10 grads from Carlson and 22 from HBS. The

number of grads that go into each industry helps you determine the actual number of job opportunities coming out of each MBA program.

We also want to note that our comparative data sets do not include geographic data (i.e., what state or region recruiters are hiring for), but you can look that up on each school’s website. A couple of additional points about geography:

·       In general, the higher ranked the MBA, the less geographically focused recruiting will be on campus. When McKinsey hires at Wharton, for example, they are hiring for any office globally, whereas at Emory, they are primarily hiring for the Atlanta office. If you have geographical constraints, be sure to ask the Career Services office about placement in your preferred geography for your target jobs.

·       Schools’ local industries influence the jobs that grads get. For example, the

best MBA programs for media and entertainment are Anderson and USC Marshall, both in Los Angeles. This happens because many companies recruit MBAs locally, and because schools become well-known for regional industries and attract students who want to work in those industries. So, if all your dream companies are New York-based, consider applying to more schools in New York!

One last note: Schools report their employment data in different ways, especially data about specific employers. Some schools report every company that hired their grads, but other schools only report top hirers or don’t report employers at all (looking at you, Stanford). Additionally, some schools combine full-time and internship employers in their list of companies, because why not make things more complicated? All this is to say, read employer lists and analyses carefully to

understand where the data might overstate or understate opportunities for full- time roles for grads.

Nontraditional MBA Candidates

A growing number of nontraditional candidates (NTCs) are recognizing the value of an MBA. Individuals from nonprofit organizations, military personnel, artists, government workers, and early career applicants fall in the NTC category. NTCs are sought by top MBA programs because of the diversity of

rich experiences and perspectives they offer in the class.

Admitted candidates from this background usually have three

qualities in common: (1) they have an exceptional leadership

track record, (2) they have done an outstanding job building

a strong case for why they need an MBA, and (3) they typically

have a lot of passion for the work they do. But despite the

strengths that they bring, NTCs have major hurdles in the

application process: they need to convince the MBA Board

that they have a rigorous background and relevant or trans-

ferable skills and that the MBA makes sense given their long-

term goals.

Houston : Energy Hub of America

                                     “The energy hub”

Houston, a city in Texas, is often referred to as the “Energy Capital of the World” due to its major contribution in the energy industry. More than half of the research centers in Houston focus on development of energy technology and its innovation. Even the majority of the economy of Houston is dependent on the energy industry, particularly oil.

So much energy, what’s the source?

Houston is a state in Texas where the major energy created is by natural gas. Texas is a major provider of natural gas in the state of the US, creating 25% of the country’s natural gas. Natural gas has been proven the best source to produce electricity there. This constitutes half of the energy of Texas, in figures 46%. Remaining half of the energy is contributed by coal production -18%, wind power accounting for 23% of total, nuclear power contributing for 11% and solar being a small share of 2. The average price of domestic energy per unit is low as 12.01 cents per kilowatt hour.

Many produce high, why are prices here so low?

Being the energy capital of the world with so many electric companies in Houston, its residents have dozens of reliable options to choose from.

In Texas, almost the whole state is made energy deregulated i.e. 85% of the total. Deregulation of electricity means that consumers hold the right to choose the company from which they will receive the electricity, Retail electricity provider (REP). For example cellular networks in India. REP’s are majorly held responsible for supply, support and maintenance of electricity provided to consumers.

Cons of REP’s

For every product, it’s a usual thing that sellers try to attract consumers by giving them the best deals. Something like this happens with electricity in Houston where there is a huge competition in REP’s. REP’s offer best rates and offers to attract and retain their consumers. This leads prices to fall down and best benefit the consumers.

1)     Option to Choose- Consumers have the option to choose best deal for them, question and complaint,  their provider easily

2)     Access to New Energy TechnologiesIn order to lower the prices, providers try to make use of the latest technologies to reduce the production costs which keeps them flowing with the new technologies.

3)     Reduced Grid Pressure- Energy regulation Texas helped to reduce load on one grid and increase its reliability. Even more funds and incentives were implemented by the government to reduce cost of production and reduce peak demand.

4)     Stimulates New Investments- The cheap production due to natural gas and getting appreciable profit, investors are more encouraged to put their money in this sector.

Is Texas' system perfect?

Houston and Texas are working efficiently with the current energy system but unseen natural calamities can move this far by. In late February 2021, Texas was hit by a storm and although Houston being chief producer, some people were made to pay high bills as during the storm, production was hindered, lines were broken and many people had no access to energy.

Only some of the people managed to get energy and they were charged massive bills for consuming energy just for a few hours. Although this matter was then called out by the Mayor of Houston and settled people and company into common grounds.

All in all, energy prices depend on the availability.

Every energy distribution method is different but the best suited for the state is decided by the government

STONE AGE TO BILLAGE

We often hear the more bills, the more BP (blood pressure), but do we know how all this goes.

Let’s ponder over the dialectics of this topic.

Energy rates -The foremost term showing up is energy rates. Energy rate is the fixed amount of money you pay for one unit for your consumption. The total bill calculates the revenue of each unit used.

You wonder, your bill came up huge this time?

 Let’s see what it included-

1)     Consumption costs - A consumer is charged as per the amount of energy used. Fixed tariff slabs are used to determine the final cost of energy. These slabs include over compensation of energy if the usage surpasses fixed threshold. This price is influenced by the market: demand, weather conditions, world reserves, and the international political situation.

2)     Supply cost - This part of the bill deals with the supply of energy from its place of production to different areas. This also involves the maintenance of the pipelines or wires i.e., the path of energy.

3)     Surplus taxes and charges- Surplus taxes, fees and other extra amounts set by state are charged.

Tariff arithmetic

The tariff slab varies with the type of consumer. Domestic tariff slabs are way different than that of industrial ones. The electricity tariffs depend on the following factors.

1)     Type of load

2)     Time at which load is required.

3)     Maximum load and usage.

4)     The power factor of the load.

5)     The amount of energy used.

Price hike in pandemic Let’s see why?

Although energy rates do not change frequently over a period of 4-8 years, there can be mishaps at any moment. The normal cycle runs gradually but in cases of unforeseen calamities prices tend to hike at a very fast pace in small amounts of time. Some of such Factors leading to sudden hike of prices are-

Extreme Weather: Unforeseen weather extremities like storms, floods cause high need of energy demands while predicted extremities are no less. Many distribution pipelines, connections are broken leading to scarcity of energy.

Outages: Sudden stoppage of production areas can severely lead to price hike. There are many reasons for it.

Source Fuels: The interconnection of raw fuel to produced energy affects the energy rates at a big level. For ex Electricity prices greatly depends of coal prices

Geopolitical Events: Many regions which import or export energy are prone to sudden changes in case of political issues (unrest), wars etc. This led to sudden dramatic change in energy rates.

Risen prices in India..!!!

Recent studies show that energy rates for Indian consumers are highest in South Asia even though India ranks lowest among 12 countries in power generation. We have understood what affects the tariff of a particular region. So the question arises how other countries manage to serve energy at less prices despite producing at prices higher than India. Much of this credit goes to the malpractices practiced by India’s power retail companies who often increase their tariff. It seems that privatization of electricity didn’t seem to work for our country. Factors like faulty meters and misleading bills add up on more to this cause.

We know the diversity in India, in this note even tariff slabs show diversity also. In states like Maharashtra and west Bengal prices are as high as Rs 7-8 and regions like Delhi it is as low as Rs 3 per unit.

Huh, we don’t own an energy plant and can’t turn the tables but

“The more we save, the less we crave”

CURRENT EDUCATION – OUT OF ORDER?

Que - In the current scenario of competitions and national level entrances, Einstein would have failed in his entrance exams? Analyzing the current rush of students in entrance exams and increasing difficulty level of competitions, you are supposed to write an article. (Also highlighting differences between practical learning and mugging up books and effects of later one on a student's creative thinking.)

Topic: CURRENT EDUCATION – OUT OF ORDER?

There’s a well-known quote that a fish can’t be judged by its ability to climb fish. No selection suited here more than this. The education system currently prevailing in India, the competitive rat race haul is all about one person knowing every bookish knowledge while fine arts is considered a hobby or just a tryout of a failed person.

In my perspective, Einstein would have failed in these entrance exams because Einstein was a

person with independent thoughts, who had a spark of curiosity, who was more of discovering things on his own and unraveling the hidden truths of physics. He could never be the person who would go to study all subjects without interest, cramming them endlessly, and using copied logics given by mentors. He was a person of thoughts, interests; he would find out about the things he was curious about and not the topics syllabus instructed. In the current education system, entrance exams focus on completing the question list, while Einstein was a person who would go to the extreme depth of the topic even if it is more profound than a sea bottom. He was a person to examine the whole sea, even after finding the pearl, he probed to reveal more secrets of the sea and become acquainted with each pearl. Needless to say every concept of physics is not less than a pearl and physics is all a deep sea.

Major chunk of the current tech macrocosm does steal the pearl found by someone else using prefixed knowledge, repetitive logic patterns; only a few people away from these can start a journey to find their pearl. The young generation now doesn’t comprehend to lead but to follow; they start doing what others are doing and never hunt for their piece of cake. They are even unaware of their passions, interests, and skills in pursuit of following the blinking world. We can’t generalize it for all but nonetheless majority counts. Practical learning is all about applying bookish concepts into real life and finding their true essence. It makes students learn skills, learn about one’s own interests. It gets rid of the fear of studying among students.

Unfortunately, the current education system in India majorly focuses on cramming and mugging up things. Mugging up things only increases our vocabulary and never knowledge. Why do students sit and cram their answers, and why can’t they write them on their own? Why don't they remember things taught in class? Simply because visuals and practicality are rarely involved in studies. Education is not about words and books but experiments and experience. It’s the understanding to use a concept when required. The current state of affairs indicate that students are left with no enterprise to question the given concepts, they consider everything correct and conclude as what they are taught and never try to apply that concept practically, and even they are not inspired to do so.

What students nowadays have started thinking is that education means learning and cramming preset syllabi in different classes and passing out. They are unaware that their education involves:

   Discovering facts on their own.

   Finding new principles.

Questioning the directions given years ago.

They need to realize that the people who gave all the laws in their textbooks were also humans no superior to them then. Even the current generation has boundless resources. Why can’t we make our laws, our theorems, why can’t we propose models ....WHY??

We need to realize that we are not robots who will only think and work as we programmed. Humans are considered all living beings as we can think, create, discover, invent, and all out of the box, even about the things we have never heard of. It would be combined efforts of all teachers, mentors, guardians to get students out of this vicious cycle of cramming and put them into a whole new space where they can run to find themselves. And Einstein, being a person who dropped out of school but still proposed his own laws and theories, would be the major inspiration for us.

City of Hills - Which City is Called City of Hills in India?

Small towns offer the best of experiences, loads of learnings, ideas for innovation and thoughts to improve self and country.

Dungarpur, a great coexistence of urban and rural culture with no differentiation, peace and harmony. A place native to tribes but home to people migrated many decades back, a place where cultures from different places proliferated. An exponentially growing city but lives are still slow paced. A place where many big things are lacking yet many are breeding.

Located in the southernmost part of Rajasthan, Dungarpur is a small city touching the borders of Gujarat state thus letting the culture of Gujarat and Rajasthan mix. Replete with a colorful past and infused with the flavors of royal Rajasthan, Dungarpur is home to palaces, man-made lakes, myriad temples and the mystic desert landscape of the arid state. Dungarpur resonates with remnants of its past that include the Guhilot and Mewar Dynasties followed by Mughal, Maratha and British rule. Today, it is a vibrant town studded with beautiful architectural delights that celebrate its rich culture with various festivals and fairs throughout the year. The district Dungarpur is named after 'the town of hillocks' and the capital of the former princely state of

Dungarpur. Aravalli ranges and tropic of cancer passing by this city, it also known as "City of Hills ". The material remains of the Ahar civilization discovered in Mewar region constitute remnants of the civilization which may date back to 4000 year ago. They also establish that this territory was, then, ruled by Kshatriyas or Satraps of the Saka, inhabitants of an area lying between Iran and Afghanistan.. In March, 1948 the ruler announced the grant of a responsible Government. However, on the inauguration of the United States of Rajasthan the local Government came to an end when the administration of the State was handed over to ' Rajpramukh' of the newly formed Union of State and Dungarpur was constituted as a district of the United States of Rajasthan.

Being a small town, it does not experience a large number of tourists but those who do visit are stuck, but the city has seen a good growth in this respect in the last 5 years. Dungarpur attracts a wide variety of tourists in its land and the city has many historical attractions and there are many religious attractions such as temples and many other beautiful attractions such as forts, palaces, ancient temples which carry the rich historical heritage of this city. Because of these wide tourist attractions; the city of Dungarpur is becoming one of the tourist destinations of Rajasthan.

The city has many palaces such as Udai Vilas Palace and the city also has nice museums which represent the ancient heritage of the state. Places like Fateh gadi, Badal mahal, dhan mata, Juna mahal, Galiyakot are most visited. A bird sanctuary park was also recently built to attract tourists as numerous foreign birds migrate here in winter. To much surprise, it is home to World's largest Krishna idol to which the city people are unaware.

Witnessing rule by rulers of different doctrines, there's great diversity in its culture. Major people are Adivasis and bhils.

Bhils are the largest tribe in Rajasthan. Banswara is the main area where Bhils in large numbers. The Bhils are considered to be fine archers.

The Bhils were originally food gatherers. However, with the passage of time, they have taken up small-scale agriculture, city residence and employment. The major fairs of Bhils are the Baneshwar fair (held near Dungarpur) and Holi. The Ghoomar and Gher dance is one well known aspect of the Bhil culture.

These people have a respectable quality to progress, advance slowly in this growing world but without leaving their cultures and traditions. Sometimes this rigidness becomes the reason for increased poverty and lower literacy rates. Tribal people majorly work as laborers, shop staff, farmers and possess less courage to start with their own profession. Youngsters, teenagers, sometimes even children are forced to work as labour due to the financial crisis. The scenario is changing nowadays with the help of increasing use of the internet, more awareness, increased transport, and many governments. Dungarpur is still counted as one of most backward places in India but also counted as a steadily and rapidly growing place. It has also been announced as Rajasthan's cleanest town. Many small business ventures, startups and services are budding. A large number of people have started living in urban standard houses but no less people live in huts, doing farming, breeding cows. There was a time where a majority of laborers were exploited for work, even when they migrated to work in states like Gujarat. Many people still temporarily migrate to Gujrat as labor due to lack of work in the city and proximity to the state, but many people have built an understanding about what being exploited is .

Being the part of a tribe, these people are always loyal to their community unlike the city people living here. Yes, the non-native, non-tribal people are referred to as city people here. The tribal have a strong sense of unity whether be a revolt or a celebration. Their advancement don't let them leave their culture and traditions which is the main reason why society evils like dowry, child infanticide still exist. Many sensible things are still considered taboo here. This is in controversy to city people who are more advanced than tribal. There is a striking contrast between lives of the two but they coexist like one city. Languages used here are mainly vagdi, tribal language and Hindi. English is part of the curriculum here in schools but not a part of people's lives. Most tribal people prefer to go to government school where the instructional language is Hindi while city people prefer to go to English schools which just teach English in registers and less conversational. Tribal people themselves show a contrast where some people are highly educated doing government jobs and some being unaware about education and attending school for perks offered. Literacy rate among city people is very high and they are aware about opportunities around the globe but even the educated tribes know less about many of the jobs and mainly focus on the government jobs available around being totally unaware about fields like software engineering, blogger, research and many more.

Being a city covering an area less than 4000 sq. km, market places are not too far to visit. Market majorly comprises different local, big and small shops. Market here lacks big malls, supermarkets, and franchise food chains, branded clothing. The reason behind this is the no demand no supply rule. City people go to nearby bigger cities to have fun while tribes try to spend less due to less earnings. The trend of looking smarter and richer is growing day by day. There are still older people who don't care about their looks. These people focus more on their bodies and are more healthy and strong as compared to city people.

Being a small town the whole vibe of the city is happiness away from hustle-bustle, loud music of clubs, away from brands, and closer to a life full of satisfaction and little joys.

The more we know about this astonishing city the more we want to know. Living here to a person living in a metro city will give a whole new experience.
