Low Fat and Fat Free Foods
You can eat more balanced and nutritious
food by getting in the habit of reading food labels and purchasing low fat and
fat free products. In recent years, many of these foods have entered the
market, greatly reducing the need to use their fattier cousins. For example,
traditional mayonnaise has 11 grams of fat per tablespoon while light
mayonnaise has just 5 grams; the prize winner is nonfat mayonnaise, with less
than 1 fat gram. Look on the supermarket shelves for fat free desserts, dairy
products, frozen foods and canned goods.
Keep in mind that while it is great to
lower your fat consumption, calories still count, don’t go overboard just
because a product is labeled fat free. And be sure to read the labels carefully
because total calorie counts vary from one product to another.
Here are a few examples of easy
substitutions to take fat and calories out of your diet:
-
Use fat free salad dressing.
-
Eat water packed tuna.
-
Eat a baked potato with fat
free sour cream.
-
Eat turkey, lean ham or some of
the other low fat meats on the market.
-
Use jelly on your toast,
preferably all fruit jelly.
-
Use nonfat sour cream.
-
Use fat free cream cheese.
