Blockchain, cryptocurrency, Bitcoin... These words seem to be ubiquitous nowadays, and zealous supporters demand new ways of using the technologies. Although blockchain technology is no longer brand new and avant-garde and everybody has heard at least something about it, governmental institutions and universities are yet to catch up. Forward-looking young people who are about to choose their first degree or those going back to school, prospective students thinking of studying IT, IB or Tourism in Eastern Europe - you may look no further as one of the most dynamic Bulgarian universities, Varna University of Management, is ready to offer scholarships in Bitcoins at both Bachelor's and Master's levels. The exact sum will depend on many factors and will initially be determined after having submitted all the necessary documents and having had a Skype interview. When VUM is finally given carte blanche to use Bitcoin, it will be the first university in Bulgaria to do so. While Bitcoin cannot be considered to be a panacea, its usage as a means of payment is expected to grab the prospective students' attention and give a strong signal of being on the leading edge when it comes to blockchain technology, to other European universities as well.
The School of Computer Science at VUM is going to teach blockchain and cryptocurrencies as part of its Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering and it is an important step not only for Bulgaria, but also for Europe as a whole as it strives to be among leading higher education providers in the world.
Varna University of Management is accredited by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and British Accreditation Council. Thanks to its cooperation with Cardiff Metropolitan University, Wales, VUM offers students a phenomenal opportunity of living in Varna but getting a degree from a UK university.
